Wurzburg

Text Box: • The setting: The Wurzburg market may not be the biggest or the best, but it has its charms. Located on two market squares in the shadow of the Gothic St. Mary's Chapel in Old Town on the Main River , it features exceptional handicrafts. The booths are filled with puppets, Nativity scenes, blankets, clothing, fresh wreaths, spices, fruits and vegetables, toys and ornaments. On the upper market square, don't miss the butter-colored House of the Falcon, a rococo mansion that was once an inn but now houses the city's cultural office.
• What to eat: Sausages coiled into spirals, roasted almonds, gingerbread cookies
and marzipan. And glühwein.
• What to buy: Furry hand puppets in the form of animals such as dogs, bears and rabbits; Schutzengels (guardian angels), odd-looking old men dolls with large noses dressed in white robes and wings; and ceramic worms with comical heads used for decoration in planter boxes.
• Beyond the market: Do not miss the Residence of the Prince-Bishops, one of the most stunning Baroque structures in the world featuring the work of Europe's finest craftsmen. Tiepolo's magnificent fresco ceiling over the grand staircase depicts heaven with figures and clouds.

  Nuremberg Christmas Market

Nuremberg Christmas Market (Photo: Christine Dierenbach)About 180 wooden stalls, festooned with red-and-white cloth, have given the Christmas Market its name of "Little Town from Wood and Cloth". 200   stall holders present their traditional wares: Nuremberg spicy gingerbread, fruit loaves, bakery goods and sweets, typical Christmas articles such as Christmas tree angels, cribs, Christmas tree ornaments and candles, toys as well as arts and crafts products. Favorite souvenirs include " Nuremberg Plum People", little figures made from prunes. And of course, by way of refreshments, there are always rolls with Nuremberg roast sausages and mugs of mulled wine.
Nuremberg , with the world’s best-known Christkindl (Christ Child) market visited by more than 2 million people every year. Located inside this medieval city’s walls and on the market square around the St. Lorenz Church, the Christkindl market has survived in its original state until the present day with specialty stalls and booths, and cultural events throughout the Advent Season. Nuremberg’s street lamp posts are festooned with Christmas symbols, garlands of natural fir and colored lights. Every year the Christkindl, a pretty girl with golden hair in a white angel outfit, officially opens the Christmas market from a large stage, and local boys’ choirs sing songs of the season.    Some specialties are unique to Nuremberg . I fell in love with the nutcrackers and Zwetschgenmaennle (decorated figurines made from dried prunes) sold by dirndl-clad ladies from their colorful booths. Of course the Nuremberger Lebkuchen

One of Germany 's most celebrated Christmas markets is the annual Reiterlesmarkt in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a walled medieval city of 12,000 along Upper Bavaria 's Romantic Road . From the end of November until just before Christmas, the market--which dates back to the 15th century and is one of the oldest in Germany --attracts thousands of visitors who come for the magical atmosphere other medieval city of Rothenburg , Germany ’s best-preserved medieval town. As you stroll the cobblestone streets, you are spellbound by the city’s 700-year-old charm. The quaint buildings with the original half- timbered walls and the town hall square are lined with festively decorated booths. A must see location in Rothenburg is Kathy Wohlfahrts famous Christmas Village and Store, brimming with gifts for you to take or send home to your loved ones.

You can spend hours strolling around town visiting the booths and shops or might just want to sit back and enjoy coffee and cake while observing the passing visitors and shoppers from all over the world. For a breathtaking view of the town, climb the stairs to the top of the wall, which fortified Rothenburg in ancient times. Take a stroll with the night watchman in the evening. With his historic garb and chant, he takes you back hundreds of years in the city’s history.
